The Palm Canyon Theatre kicked off its new season with the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Oklahoma! Originally produced in 1943, the show still bursts of fresh fun here under the thoughtful direction of Don Hillier. David Boyd plays Curly, a handsome cowpoke, who has his eyes set on Laurey Williams (Nikki Hock). But a wrench is thrown into Curly’s courting plans when Laurey uses farmhand Jud’s (Gary Shaw) attention toward her to make Curly jealous, ultimately ending in tragedy. The cast is rounded out by Suzie Thomas-Wourms as Aunt Eller, Jennifer Singer as Ado Annie, Robby Nothstine as Will Parker and Alan Berry as Ali Hakim. Groundbreaking for its time, the show features a host of classics such as “Oh What a Beautiful Morning,” “The Surrey With the Fringe On Top” and “People Will Say We’re In Love.” The show runs through Oct. 19. Palm Canyon Theatre’s season continues with: 1776, Nov. 1-16; The King and I, Nov. 28-Dec. 14; Damn Yankees, Jan. 23-Feb. 8; Night of the Iguana, Feb. 13-22; Once Upon a Mattress, March 6-22; Noises Off!, April 10-26; and Gigi, May 8-24. This year’s Hot Summer Nights show is Little Shop of Horrors, June 26-July 12. For more information, visit the Theatre’s website at http://www.palmcanyontheatre.org. |
